Czech motorists can enjoy a special Christmas present this year. The Motorway Directorate has announced that 28 new kilometers of the D3 motorway, including the České Budějovice bypass, will be delivered by December 21 at the latest. This was confirmed by Mátl Radek, head of the ŘSD, during the inspection of the work area. Mátl detailed that by December 21, 2024, the 28-kilometer section of the D3 highway from the Úsilné intersection to Kaplici nádraží, including the Pohůrka tunnel, will be open for use. Work is currently underway on additional sections of the D3 in the southern Czech Republic, which lead to the Austrian border and are expected to be completed by 2027. The opening of the new section is due to the delay in the construction of the České Budějovice highway bypass. It consists of two parts: the sections between Úsilné – Hodějovice (7.2 km) and Hodějovice – Třebonín (12.5 km). In addition to the redesign of the Pohuřka tunnel and the elimination of black garbage dumps, the lack of materials caused by the Covid epidemic and the Russian-Ukrainian conflict also contributed to the more than two-year delay in construction. According to the original plans, the bypass was supposed to be completed by September 2022, according to then-Transport Minister Dan Ťok.
Due to construction delays, the related Třebonín – Kaplice nádraží (8.5 km) section will also be completed in parallel, the construction of which began in February 2022. Currently, 70 kilometers of the D3 highway are in traffic, stretching from the border of Central and South Bohemia to the northern edge of České Budějovice. Another 44 kilometers under construction will reach from Budějovice to the Austrian border, of which 28 new kilometers will be opened this December. The works in southern Bohemia are expected to be completed by 2026, while the entire Praha - Linz highway is scheduled to be ready by 2031. Motorists who use the D4 motorway can enjoy a similar pleasure.
Another 32 kilometers between Příbram and Písek will be delivered in December, although the exact date has not yet been determined. The construction is carried out by the Via Salis consortium within the framework of the PPP project, and it will also be their task to operate it, so it does not fall under the supervision of ŘSD. 50 comments
