In recent years, the debate regarding the expansion of motorways has increasingly come into focus in Switzerland. Many people are raising their voices against the continuous widening and construction of roads. On November 24, we will vote on one of the country's largest highway expansion projects in recent years. The main traffic routes can become six- to eight-lane monster roads. As a result, more cars, more noise, increased air pollution and even more asphalt will represent the future - which, however, may come at the expense of the quality of life and the environment. IG Wild beim Wild urges them to reject the plan entirely. Here are some arguments against highway expansion:
1. Environmental burden The expansion of highways increases environmental pollution. Due to the increased traffic, the noise and air pollution increases, which not only worsens the quality of life of the people living there, but also has a harmful effect on the environment. 2. Climate change We must fight climate change more intensively and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The expansion of highways encourages traffic by car, which is contrary to the government's climate goals. 3. Covering natural areas Every expansion of highways means the concreting of additional areas that are important for nature and biodiversity. This can lead to reduced habitats for animal and plant species, negatively affecting the ecosystem. 4. Supporting sustainable transport Instead of building a motorway, the emphasis should be on supporting sustainable transport modes. It is important to invest in the expansion of public transport options and the development of cycle paths in order to achieve a real change in mobility.
5. Exploiting Alternatives Innovative approaches to reducing traffic without building new highways already exist. These include making work schedules more flexible, work-from-home models, and carpooling programs. These alternatives should be better supported and developed. Summary
