The documentation of the contract relating to the preparation of the Feasibility Study for the Bucharest-Giurgiu highway was submitted to the National Public Procurement Agency. The Bucharest-Giurgiu highway is part of a major development program to improve Romania's road infrastructure, which affects Giurgiu county and will have a significant impact on the national freight and transport network, especially in terms of traffic to and from Western Europe. The deadline for the development of the Feasibility Study is 18 months, during which the technical details, such as the design of the route and related existing or planned road infrastructures, will be determined. Irinel Ionel Scrioșteanu said on Facebook that in terms of routes and connections, it is of utmost importance that the new Bucharest-Giurgiu road be in line with the Bucharest A0 highway, up to the Bucharest-Pitești A1 highway, and connect with the Bucharest-Alexandria highway.
This development has the future potential to be part of the second ring road around the capital, which is currently in the planning stages. Regarding the structure, he believed that the concrete-based structure, which was also used on the road between the DN5 and the Friendship Bridge, would be an ideal choice. This road - commonly known as the German Autobahn - opened to traffic in December 2021. The use of concrete makes road surfaces more resistant to climate change: they are less deformed by high temperatures and have a higher load capacity. In this section, where heavy vehicle and truck traffic is significant, the application of this type of solution is particularly important, as it will protect the local and national economy, reducing the need for foreign bitumen imports. Maintenance of a concrete road is less expensive, as it requires less intervention than asphalt, and it lasts longer. The public procurement was launched by the National Road Construction Company - CNIR.
